Ghost Hunts

During the 1600s, Britain became increasingly concerned about the practice of witchcraft. Many women and men where put on trial and often executed for a number of ‘sins’ which pointed to witchcraft. The most infamous were the Lancashire Witch Trials of 1612, in which 10 women and 1 man were sentenced to death.

The Witch Finder General is the name Matthew Hopkins gave himself. He spent 3 years of his life, from 1644 to 1647, hunting witches in Britain. It is believed that Hopkins was responsible for around 300 deaths of ‘witches’ in this time. It was a business venture first and foremost, after Hopkins realised many fearful people were more than happy to pay to rid their towns and villages of witches.

Living in Manningtree, and operating mainly around the East Midlands, Hopkins tested the innocence of people using torturing methods. The most deadly of his techniques was ‘swimming’. A person accused would be tied to a chair and thrown into water. If the person floated, they were declared to be a witch and faced death. If they sank, they were proclaimed innocent, which was a sentence no longer of any use to them.

The areas of Manningtree and Mistley in Essex are said to be haunted by Hopkins as well as some of his unfortunate victims.

There have been many sightings of Hopkins, in his 17th Century attire.

Dare you brave the streets of these historic towns in search of The Witch Finder General?
