St Johns Mansion was built in 1750 as a family home.
From 1791-1900, the building was used to house a school, St Johns Academy. 1900s-1950s saw administration offices of the War Department at St Johns Mansion. In 1960, the museum was opened.
A hospital once occupied the site before the mansion was built, from 1154. It was known as the Hospital of Saint John The Baptist. It also included a chapel and a graveyard. Bones were discovered in the grounds of the mansion during building work in the 1830s and then again in 1987.
Two sisters died in the house. Jane Stoughton died on 22nd March 1755 from burn wounds. Her clothing caught light from an open fire. Ann Stoughton died after her sister. She died ‘of fright’ after the house was broken into.
Ann and her sister Jane are believed to haunt St Johns, as well as children and a violent man in the cellar.
There is a real mix of reported activity at the mansion. Laughing and moaning is heard. Full bodied apparitions and dark shadows are seen. Floral perfume is smelt, and people have reported being pushed and pulled by unseen hands!
