Ruthin Gaol was built in 1878 to replace the prison that previously existed, which failed to meet the standards required. This new prison could hold 100 inmates, as opposed the previous of 37.
The prison ceased used in 1916, and the building was bought by the local council. It was used for offices and the town library. During World War II, the building was converted to use as a munitions factory.
The council reclaimed the building after the war and in 2004, after extensive renovations, it became a Ruthin Gaol Museum which still exists today.
Despite the fact that only one known execution took place in the gaol, the reports of hauntings are still numerous! The prisoner, who met his fate by execution, is said to haunt the prison, in particular the ‘Condemned Man’s’ cell. He is said to be attracted to women, and to touch them inappropriately.
Another reported spirit is that of an old prison guard. He is said to have completely vanished during his rounds one day, never to be seen again! What became of this guard? Maybe his spirit is trying to let others know?!
Slamming doors are heard, as well as the disembodied voice of a young girl.
