Pendle Hill in Lancashire is commonly associated with witches. During the 17th Century, there were many witch trials in both England and America. One of the most famous of these trials was that of the Pendle Witches. In 1612, 10 women and 2 men who lived around Pendle Hill were accused of murdering 10 people through witchcraft.
One of the alleged witches died whilst being held in Lancaster Castle cells. The other 11 were tried, one was found to be not guilty and the remaining 10 were hanged on charges of murder and witchcraft.
A Bronze Age burial site exists on the summit of the hill.
In 2011, the remains of what is believed to have been a witch’s cottage were discovered by archaeologists in a mound in the grass. Included in the 17th Century cottage was the remains of a cat bricked up in a wall. This was a ritual performed by those hoping to keep evil spirits from their homes.
Many events to take place at Pendle Hill focus on the witches, who are said to haunt the hill and surrounding areas. The spirits of the witches were made famous by Most Haunted who investigated the hill on their live Halloween show in 2004.
However, there are many other spirits said to also haunt the area including airmen and children.
Dare you brave this ancient hill to discover who may still be haunting there?
