Between 1860 and 1868, two forts were built on Portsdown Hill to protect Portsmouth from attack. One of those forts was Palmerston Fort, the other being Fort Widley.
As well as the Armament, the fort also contained barracks. During the 19th Century, a number of different infantry units were stationed at the barracks.
The fort continued to be used by the military, through both world wars, right up until it was sold to the council in 1972. The ‘Peter Ashley’ charity now run an activity centre at the site, which includes an equestrian centre.
Full bodied apparitions have been seen around the fort, including that of a drummer boy, a sergeant, and French prisoners from the Napoleonic War.
Poltergeist activity is experienced, with items having been thrown through thin air in front of frightened staff members. Strange sounds are often heard, with unexplained bangs and disembodied footsteps being a common occurrence. Whistling is also heard, which is believed to be from the sergeant.
