Ghost Hunts

HISTORY

In Edinburgh in 1788, the South Bridge was built. Edinburgh was a walled city with little space for expansion. This resulted in tenements being built, people living on top of one another, and ultimately below.

There were 19 arches under the South Bridge, containing approximately 120 rooms varying in sizes, and these were swiftly utilised by businesses. Workshops, taverns and tradesmen such a cobblers made use of the arches, whilst merchants used stored their goods in others. However, the arches and vaults were not water-tight, and businesses soon found their stock being damaged and trade being disrupted. They vacated the area, and a less desirable clientele moved in.

Homeless unfortunates began to settle in the vaults, and found themselves sharing the space with criminals, gamblers and prostitutes. It was dark, damp, and no one who had any sense ventured down there. There are even stories that Edinburgh’s infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare prowled the vaults looking for fresh bodies to sell!

The vaults were finally sealed off for safety reasons, and were only rediscovered in the 1980s!

HAUNTINGS

Many flock to the vaults to investigate, and many have been left terrified! Hauntings range from innocent children to sinister men. One such figure is a malevolent spirit simply referred to as ‘The Watcher.’

Visitors have left the vaults with bruises and scratches allegedly caused by supernatural means.

Strange voices have been heard to the naked ear and ghosts have even shown up in visitor’s photographs!

The Edinburgh Vaults are definitely not for the faint hearted! Do you dare take them on?
