Ghost Hunts

Dorchester Old Court & Cells was the shire hall for Dorchester from ins construction in 1796 right up until 1955. It is now a Grade II listed building and operates as the Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum.

The British author Thomas Hardy served as a magistrate at the court house. It is believed that his experiences there led him pursue a career in writing, with one particular case of domestic abuse inspiring him to write ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’.

During the re-development of the museum in 2018, workmen were left terrified after unexplained goings-on.

Dark shadows are seen creeping along the walls, strange noises are heard as well as disembodied voices.
