Deal Castle is a Tudor fort, built by Henry VIII in 1539. It was built to protect the coastline from threat of invasion as a result of Henry’s foreign policy, his mingling in foreign affairs, divorce from Catherine of Aragon, taking over of the Church of England and the Dissolution of the Monasteries. All this left him an unpopular man, especially wth the Pope!
One of the most striking features of Deal Castle is its unusual design. This artillery fortress was designed to allow all-round gunfire and the layout allowed for 140 guns to be active at one time! This vision never came into fruition however, and at the time of Henry’s death, 57 guns were in place at Deal Castle.
During its near 500 year year existence, Deal Castle has witnessed many battles. Among those were a huge siege during the English Civil Wars in 1648, and the Battle of The Downs between Spanish and Dutch fleets on the Channel.
From the 1800s, the castle was eased into military retirement. Renovation work started around 100 years later, at the beginning of the 20th Century. The castle played a part in the Second World War. It is now a tourist attraction managed by English Heritage.
Unexplained cold spots have been felt around the castle with no apparent breeze responsible.
White shadow figures have been seen, and the unexplained sound of clinking chains has been heard. Feelings of unease, without any known cause, have been described by visitors, as well as the presence of someone unseen.
Poltergeist activity has also been reported, with a heavy wooden door being seen to slam on its own!
