Cusworth Hall was built between 1740 and 1745. However, Cusworth was mentioned in the Domesday Book and therefore tells us that settlements existed on the lands as far back as the Anglo-Saxon period.
An old Cusworth Hall existed in the village of Cusworth dating from 1327. When this newer hall was built on instruction from William Wrightson, the old hall was largely demolished. Materials from the old hall went into the production of the new.
The hall was purchased from the family in 1961 by Doncaster Rural District Council. Extensive restoration work has been carried out over the years to both house and gardens. The first museum was opened in 1967 and the hall now boasts a museum, function hall and parkland.
The tales of hauntings coming from the hall are frightful and plentiful!
Spirits of children have been seen and heard singing. A tragic accident led to a former worker haunting here, and the hall can even boast its own Grey Lady! These are but to name a few. The spirits are said to make themselves known frequently and poltergeist activity has been experienced!
Will you be lucky enough to experience an encounter? Now’s your chance!
