A motte and bailey castle was built in 1086 by the Normans as they took advantage of the location. Caldicot Castle secured them control over south Wales, as well as enabling them to keep an eye on the comings and going in the Bristol Channel. This positioning also made the passage of trade a lot smoother.
In 1381, additions were made to the castle including a gatehouse and drawbridge. The castle was passed between hands and began falling into great disrepair, until it was sold to Joseph Richard Cobb in 1885. Cobb planned to restore the castle creating a family home, and the work continued right up until 1964, when the castle was bought from Cobb’s grandson by Chepstow Rural District Council.
The Caldicot Castle has remained open to the public ever since.
Full bodied apparitions have been seen around the castle, including those of monks wearing brown robes and a ‘grey lady’.
Many disembodied sounds are heard throughout the castle, from phantom footsteps, to unseen people talking and screams of despair.
Are you brave enough to investigate this castle with nearly 1,000 years of history?
