Bodmin Jail was built by prisoners of war in 1779. At the beginning, the prisoners lived in good condition. The jail was light and airy, and prisoners had their own cells. There was also a chapel and an infirmary for the sick.
After the crime wave at the end of the Napoleonic War, numbers of prisoners increased, and living conditions declined. Criminals were all housed together, from vagrants to felons and debtors, men and women.
During the Victorian times, new Acts of Parliament meant that things had to change, conditions for prisoners had to improve. A new 220 cell prison was built, including the now ruined Naval Wing.
As you can imagine with any old prison, many deaths occurred. 60 people were executed and many more would have died from illness and general bad health.
So many deaths do not occur without leaving a mark on the surroundings, and Bodmin Jail is no exception.
Many well-known prisoners are said to haunt the jail, as well as a priest and a warden.
It seems that life in the jail continues for those on the other size. The sounds of shuffling feet and rattling keys are heard. Fouls smells are experienced and full bodied apparitions are seen. Are the prisoners now free to roam the building? Who will you bump into?
