LOCATION INFORMATION

LOCATION: Crewe, Cheshire, UK

DATE BUILT: 1887, and the rebuilt after a fire in 1911. 

GRADE LISTED: Grade II

RUINED: No.

ORIGINAL PURPOSE: A theatre house.  

OTHER USES: The theatre also showed circus performances in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. It is also a ghost hunt venue. 

PREVIOUS BUILDINGS ON SITE: A Roman Catholic chapel once stood on the site. It was built for Irish railway immigrants in 1852. The disused chapel became the first Lyceum Theatre. The choir balcony became a Circle and a stage was built. 

HISTORY

INTERESTING FACTS: An well from the old chapel still remains today under the stage.

An exorcism was carried out on the theatre in 1969 but the activity continues to this day.

CLAIM TO FAME: Charlie Chaplin performed at the theatre in 1906 as well as Stan Laurel, known at the time as Stanley Jefferson. 

The theatre has the only working Sun Burner (an old air conditioning unit) in England. 

GRIZZLY HISTORY: The theatre, known at the time as the New Opera House, was gutted by fire on March 11th 1910. 

 Tommy Ellis, a trainee lion tamer, was mauled on the stage by a lion named Satan. Fortunately, he survived his injuries. 

DEATHS: A distraught ballet dancer is said to have hung herself in her dressing room.

• An actor wearing a cape and holding a cigarette.

• A lady in white, wearing embroidered period dress. 

• A stagehand named Charlie.  

• A small child. 

• A vagrant.

TIMESPAN OF HAUNTINGS: Unknown.

REPORTED PARANORMAL ACTIVITY:

Audible: Whistling is heard – believed to be Charlie. 

Visual: Full bodied apparitions. 

Intelligent:

Sensory: Sudden drops in temperature. Perfume is smelt as well as smoke. 

Poltergeist: Items left on the stage go missing.
