LOCATION INFORMATION

LOCATION: Pluckley, Kent, UK

DATE BUILT: 1406, with stables and outbuildings dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries.  

GRADE LISTED: Grade II

RUINED: No.

ORIGINAL PURPOSE: A farmstead and oast house.  

OTHER USES: The farm is now home to a luxury hotel and fine dining restaurant. It is also a wedding venue.

PREVIOUS BUILDINGS ON SITE: It is not known if anything existed on the site before the medieval farm.

HISTORY

INTERESTING FACTS: A 15 minute walk takes you to the setting for the popular TV series ‘The Darling Buds Of May’.

CLAIM TO FAME: The 2016 reality TV show ‘Celebrity Haunted Hotel’ was set on the farm/hotel.

Pluckley has the reputation for being the most haunted village in England, featuring in the Guinness Book of Records in 1998.  

GRIZZLY HISTORY: None known. 

DEATHS: Edward Brett once lived on the farm with his family. One afternoon in 1900, he gave his wife 15 shillings, a penny for each of his children and calmly walked to the dairy, where he fatefully shot himself. 

On 1st September 1940, a Spitfire crashed in the paddock at the back of the farm after an dogfight in the air. Officer Oswald Pigg, aged 22, sadly lost his life. There is now a plaque dedicated to “Ossie”near the site.

Audible: Footsteps heard. Disembodied voices. Strange scratching sounds heard on the servants staircase.  

Visual: Full bodied apparitions. Strange lights seen. Dark shadows. 

Intelligent:

Sensory: People report the feeling of being watched when alone.

Poltergeist: Plates are said to have flown off of the table and smashed in the dining room.
