LOCATION: Knutsford, Cheshire, UK

DATE BUILT: Early 1400s. The timber frame was replaced with brick in 1700s. 

GRADE LISTED: A 'Scheduled Ancient Monument'

ORIGINAL PURPOSE: A manor house

OTHER USES: It was also used to accomodate workers from the Tatton Estate after a new hall was built in 1770. It remained a home to the Edgerton family until 1958 when it was then given to the National Trust. 

PREVIOUS BUILDINGS ON THE SITE: The hall was surrounded by the anglo-saxon village of Tatton. The village has long since vanished, but remains of the houses can be seen by mounds in the grass.

CLAIM TO FAME:

Tatton Old Hall has appeared on ITV's drama 'Lady Killers' (1980). It is a British drama about famous murder cases involving women. It also has a '5 spook' rating in the AA Guide To Haunted Britain.  

 

GRIZZLY HISTORY: On many sites, people suggest that murders have taken place at the hall. I am yet to find any evidence of this, but curiosity will keep me searching...

 

DEATHS: Unknown

RESIDENT GHOSTS: 

• A gamekeeper called Tom. He was once a poacher and is described as being a nasty drunk. He is said to torment female visitors to the hall.

• The 'Matriarch'

• A young girl

 

REPORTED PARANORMAL ACTIVITY:

AudibleHeavy footsteps. Shuffling. A woman crying. Whispers and whistles.

Visual: Dark shadows. Full bodied apparitions - a man seen sitting in a chair cleaning his gun, accompanied by a dog.

Poltergeist: Poltergeist activity reported. 

Sensory: People feeling extrememly frightened for unknown reasons. People feeling their hair being tugged. A tightening sensation around the throats of visitors.
